This is an article from The Washington Post written in September, 2015 that I feel is beneficial for educators that work in public schools to read. The author, Linda K. Wertheimer, discusses a time in her fourth grade class where her teacher told her that Jesus could solve any of the problems in the world. Linda was forced to sing songs such as “Jesus Loves Me” in a public school setting. What was confusing for Linda was that she was Jewish and was never taught about Jesus before. This article explains how educators should provide students with facts about the histories and practices of world religions, including faiths that few students know a lot about.By doing this, students will be prepared to critically analyze and evaluate what they see every night on television based on real information rather than cruel stereotypes and assumptions.
